To take the surprises out of the cost of bus hire, have the right information available for the bus company.

When hiring a bus for a group of people, know the essential details. Bus hire is based on several factors. My explanation see here.

1/ Type of bus or Tour coach… newer ones fully featured with DVD players, A/C etc. will be more expensive.

2/ Times… drivers are paid from the moment they start work at their depot until after your days hire, cleaning and re-fuelling. You will need to know exactly the time of pick-up and drop off of your passengers.

3/ Distance… heavy vehicles are expensive to operate. Every mile costs money. Know the routing you need to take, this is essential. If you deviate from the most direct route then the bus company will certainly need additional money to pay for any additional miles.

4/ Sundry costs… Road tolls, driver meals and accommodation are normally included in your hire costs.

Safety: When deciding on a bus company, safety is the first most important factor. Check the company has a current operator’s license. A bad operator can have their licence revoked by the transport agency for negligence and overall poor compliance. Check the bus is suitable for your purposes, there are buses and there are buses, if you’re travelling long distance, you really need a more comfortable vehicle with nice seats and good luggage capacity, just across town, a low floor urban bus is just fine.

Don’t put up with bad drivers, grumpy drivers are normally working for poor performing companies with low standard vehicles. Make sure the driver understands where you want to go. Remember, buses are not like cars or motorbikes, if the driver needs to go a certain route, they need to know well in advance. Vehicle Access: Often because buses sit very low to the ground, they cannot go beyond the curb. Places you can get a car or even a truck are not the same for a bus, avoid putting pressure on the driver to take a vehicle down driveways and farm access roads as its very easy to get the bus stuck. A small walk from the main road is quite acceptable. Avoid Food and drinks, keeping your bus clean is respectful, the driver will most certainly have to clean the vehicle when he/she gets back to the depot but picking up food scraps is not part of the hire fee. If you like your driver… tip them. A few dollars and a smile will go a long way.
